Kendell Marvel is an acclaimed American country music singer-songwriter known for his gritty, authentic style blending traditional honky-tonk country, outlaw influences, and southern rock elements. Born and raised in Southern Illinois (between Galatia and Thompsonville), Marvel started performing at a young age—playing barroom gigs in honky-tonks from age 10 alongside his father, covering classic country tunes in exchange for perks like free pickled eggs. He moved to Nashville (specifically Cheatham County, Tennessee) in 1998 to pursue songwriting full-time. On his very first day in town, he co-wrote “Right Where I Need to Be” with Casey Beathard, which became Gary Allan’s breakthrough hit from the album Smoke Rings in the Dark (2000). It peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and No. 42 on the Hot 100, establishing Marvel as a top-tier Nashville songwriter. As a songwriter, Marvel has penned numerous hits and album tracks for major country artists. Highlights include:
“Right Where I Need to Be” by Gary Allan (No. 5 country hit)
“Either Way” by Chris Stapleton (from From A Room: Volume 1, 2017; a Grammy-winning single, also recorded by Lee Ann Womack; co-written with Stapleton and Tim James)
“Don’t Think I Can’t Love You” by Jake Owen (No. 2 country hit)
“Twang” by George Strait
“That Lonesome Song” (title track) by Jamey Johnson (Grammy-nominated album)
“Startin’ With Me” by Jake Owen
“Yee Haw” by Jake Owen
Other notable cuts: “Tougher Than Nails” (Joe Diffie), “Buzzin'” (Blake Shelton), “Good For A Good Time” (Darius Rucker), “Rum Dumb” (Kenny Chesney), and collaborations like “Younger Me” (Brothers Osborne, Grammy-winning)
He has co-written extensively with artists like Chris Stapleton (over 60 songs together) and others including Randy Houser, Jamey Johnson, and more. His songwriting has earned multiple GRAMMY wins and nominations. As a solo artist, Marvel launched his recording career later, debuting with the concept album Lowdown and Lonesome (2017, Big Daddy Records; produced by Keith Gattis). It features 10 tracks exploring themes of heartbreak, vice, and rowdy rebellion, with most songs written or co-written by Marvel (including the title track with Gattis and Houser). His follow-up, Solid Gold Sounds (2019, Easy Eye Sound; co-produced by Dan Auerbach and David R. Ferguson), continued his signature sound. His third album, Come On Sunshine (2022, self-released; produced by Beau Bedford), includes tracks like “Put It In The Plate,” “Hellbent on Hard Times,” “Dyin’ Isn’t Cheap,” and “Off My Mind” (co-written with Auerbach), touching on resilience, breakups, bad habits, and traditions. Recent singles include “Bad Bad Boys” (2025, feat. Isaac Gibson & Ashley McBryde) and others. Marvel is also a road warrior, touring extensively, hosting a monthly residency (“Kendell Marvel’s Honky Tonk Experience”) at Nashville’s Exit/In since 2017 (featuring guests like Cody Jinks, Brothers Osborne, Alison Krauss, and Ashley McBryde), and has appeared at the Grand Ole Opry. In 2021, he settled into a 200-year-old farmhouse in the Tennessee countryside while continuing to write and perform.
